海螺沟冰川大瀑布沿冰川上行三公里,绕过黑松林,即可望见这条大冰瀑布。冰瀑布宽达1100米,落差1080米,由无数极其巨大的光芒四射的冰块组成,仿佛从蓝天直泄而下的一道银河。除非你亲眼见到,没有任何词汇能形容它的瑰丽笥伟大。冰川最高点的海拔为6750米,而最下端的海拔高度仅为2850米,它不但是低纬度低海拔的冰川,而且是落差最大的冰川。由于冰体组成的冰瀑布不象水瀑布那样流动,但由于冰体融冻作用,它不断产生冰崩。冰川活动剧烈的春夏季,一天可达上千次,最多时一次可塌垮上百万立方米的冰体。冰崩时,冰体间剧烈的撞击与磨擦会产生放电现象,一时蓝光闪烁、大地震颤、山谷轰呜,千千万万的冰块滑落着、飞溅着,扬起漫天雪雾。冰瀑布的观景点是通过多次观察与计算选择的,远在冰瀑布数公里外,因此,即使是最大规模的冰崩也不会给游客的安全带来威胁。海螺沟冰川众多,较大的冰川就有三条,最大的称为一号冰川,长约14公理。海螺沟冰川常人最容易进入的冰川,一般体力者可亲身登上冰体厚度为100米左右的冰川,但一般是不允许游客自行前往大冰瀑布的,因为在冰层覆盖下有暗河,稍不留意,就有可能酿成大错,曾经有一位登山者就掉入暗河。如果要上冰川,一定要当地的导游带领才可以进入。海螺沟的二、三号冰川分别长为4.8、4.2公理,在一号冰川之侧面,但他们的最低点的海拔也在3650米以上,常人很难到达,仅供专业登山者攀登。
