“海宁潮”蔚为天下奇观,由来已久。据传观潮之风,始于汉而盛于宋,南宋起便把每年农历八月十八日定为观潮节。海宁观潮最佳地段在海宁市盐官镇海塘镇海塔下观潮亭一带。在这里可看到“宝塔一线潮”的雄奇壮丽景象。涌潮未来之前,钱塘江平静又浩瀚。但见江流茫茫,秋水共长天一色。当江潮初起时,东方天际处,隐约传来阵阵急骤的细雨声,极目望去远处显出一条长长的银线。那银线变得愈粗愈近,化作一条横卧江面的白练,那骤雨声也渐响渐近,变作瓢泼暴雨声,且越来越响,犹如闷雷似地滚来。尔后,潮头临近,沧海横流,江水猛涨,万顷波涛,顷刻一线白练变成了一道数米高的矗立水墙,潮声犹如万马奔腾,惊雷贯耳。刹时间,潮峰从眼前呼啸闪过,向西面去。宋苏东坡赞曰:“八月十八潮,壮观天下无。”除了盐官海塘是观潮最佳点外,盐官以东7公里的八堡和盐官以西11公里的老盐仓也成了新的观潮佳处。在八堡海塘,可以看到东、南两潮汇合,两潮相撞,一声巨响,仿佛山崩地裂,潮峰突起叠成冰山雪峰,令人惊心动魄。老盐仓地段有座9米高、650米长的丁字坝,江潮来到这里猛冲丁字坝时,一声霹雳,潮头突兀竖起,返身扑向十八层石阶的鱼鳞石塘,霎时扬起银色暴雨,冲向天际,煞是惊险,人称“返头潮”。在这20公里地段内,潮头的速度每小时为25公里,只要乘坐观潮专车与潮头赛跑,可先在八堡观东、南两潮相撞,再到盐官饱览一线潮,再赶到老盐仓欣赏返头潮,可谓大饱眼福。海宁潮之所以特大,民间传说是因吴国大夫伍子胥怒不可遏,乘着素车白马在钱塘江中奔腾吼叫。其实潮汐的成因主要是太阳和月球引力作用及地球自转产生的离心力之故。海宁潮的形成还由于钱塘江独具的地理条件,喇叭形的海湾,出海口的江面宽达100公里,而至海宁盐官附近骤缩至2.69公里,至此,江潮迅速抬高,流速加大,再加上江口河床有大栏门沙坝。潮水像碰到一堵墙,前浪受阻,后浪又起,后浪赶前浪,一浪高一浪,于是形成波峰陡立,汹涌澎湃的奇伟壮观。海宁观潮之余还可以游览盐官镇的名胜古迹:镇海塔、中山亭、无风海涛亭、海神庙、清代陈阁老府、王国维故居等。海宁市硖石镇有惠力寺、徐志摩墓、沈山、紫微山等名胜古迹。
