第二信使第二信使secondmessenger能把激素或神经递质的信息传到细胞内，并引起相应生理效应的细胞内的某种化学物质。大多数含氮激素及某些神经递质在与细胞膜受体结合时，首先触发细胞内某种化学物质的生成，进而通过该物质对细胞内多种代谢过程的影响而发挥生理作用。在此过程中，激素起第一信使的作用。一般认为，环腺苷酸（cAMP）是多数含氮激素作用的第二信使。此外，环鸟苷酸（cGMP）、钙离子以及前列腺素也可能起第二信使作用或起辅助配合作用，使环腺苷酸能充分而完善地发挥作用。含氮激素（肽类、蛋白质类、胺类）从内分泌腺分泌出来，经由血液到达靶组织后，并不直接进入细胞内发挥作用，而是与靶细胞膜上的特异性受体结合，激活磷酸化酶，引起靶细胞的固有的反应，如腺细胞的分泌、肌肉细胞的收缩、神经细胞动作电位的出现、细胞膜通透性的改变、细胞分裂与分化以及各种酶的反应等等。由于含氮激素仅把信息传递至靶细胞表面，而后是由环腺苷酸接着把这个信息由细胞表面传送到靶细胞内有关酶系，从而发挥激素对靶细胞功能的调节作用。因此，人们把激素叫做第一信使，而把环腺苷酸称为第二信使，并把这一类激素作用机制的学说叫做第二信使学说。环鸟苷酸作为第二信使发挥作用是通过细胞内的G-激酶。在某些含氮激素引起的生理过程中还必须有钙离子存在。前列腺素E与环腺苷酸的关系密切，例如，前列腺素E可以增加许多组织细胞内环腺苷酸的含量。
