电解质电解质electrolyte在水溶液中和熔融状态下都能导电的物质。它们在水溶液中都能自动地离解为阳离子和阴离子。电解质可以相对地分为强电解质和弱电解质,所谓相对,即意味着强弱之间还存在一些中间状态。酸、碱、盐都是电解质,酸有强酸(如盐酸、硝酸)和弱酸(如乙酸、碳酸)之分,碱也有强碱(如氢氧化钠、氢氧化钙)和弱碱(如氨、有机胺)之分。除少数例外,盐通常都是强电解质。
