衰变 一个粒子自动消失而转化成两个或两个以上其他种粒子的过程。衰变是由场之间的相互作用所引起的，通过这些相互作用，粒子之间可以相互转化。同一种粒子可以通过几种不同的相互作用而衰变，而且即使是通过同一种相互作用衰变最后转化成的粒子也可以不同，粒子衰变时，按其转化成的粒子类型的不同而称其具有不同的衰变方式。各衰变方式按引起该种衰变的相互作用是强相互作用、电磁相互作用或弱相互作用而分为强衰变、电磁衰变或弱衰变。 现已发现的300多种基本粒子中只有 11种是可能不会衰变的。在粒子物理学中把凡是不具有强衰变方式的粒子称为稳定粒子，而把有强衰变方式的粒子称为不稳定粒子，即共振态。现已发现的稳定粒子有54种。 在衰变中占主要比率的一种或几种衰变方式称为主要衰变方式。一般说来，不稳定粒子的主要衰变方式是强衰变方式。
