穆尔河畔的现代美术馆/新艺术中心（kunsthaus graz）为英国建筑师彼得库克（peter cook）的作品，以蓝色的塑料玻璃拼贴而成，当地人亲切地称之为“友善的外星人”（a friendly alien）。座落在格拉茨市中心的超现实主义建筑与红顶尖塔的古堡、钟楼所形成的强烈反差是格拉茨最经典的标志景观。格拉茨现代美术馆是彼得库克“生物存在式建筑”理念的体现和诠释，与周围传统建筑的视觉反差和突兀也使该馆被形容为“城市怪兽”、“外星人入侵”，而不规则的前卫造型又被人们称为是“有鳃的巨兽”、“巨型膀胱”、“毛毛虫”等。美术馆于2000年开工修建，投资约2300万英镑，2003年完工开放。整个美术共分五部分：中间凸起的部分称为“belly”(胃)；屋顶貌似心脏血管的称为“nozzles”(管口)；屋顶的柱状物是可以眺望全城的休闲吧sushi-bar既“needle”(针管)；地面支撑部分称为“pin”(栓脚)；最后则是入口、售票处，只有这一部分是在1842年的老建筑基础上休整而来的，现在仍可看到当时精美的铸钢雕花，这里还有书店和礼品贩卖部等。美术馆地面展览厅共三层，主要展览空间在屋顶层，整个大厅为无柱型设计；大厅需要的自然光由屋顶探出的15根nozzles管口提供。大厅中有一个移动式斜坡道，参观者可以缓缓地被吸到“belly”既“胃”部分的展厅，营造一种被艺术吞没的剧院效果，十分新颖独特。
